CONCOURSE

‘Concourse’ is an ongoing project that aims to portray stories of the multi-dimensionality and embodied emotions of travellers’ experiences in and around railway stations.

The idea for the project came in summer 2023 while I waited for a train.  From the mezzanine of London’s Kings Cross railway station, I captured images of scenes unfolding on the concourse beneath me.  The flow of passengers and their baggage constantly changed, as did the light, and the emotional feel of the scene.  I wondered about the variety and complexity of personal stories playing out simultaneously.  It looked and felt as if locations and travellers occupied several dimensions in time, space, and emotion.

The project allows me to embrace my passions for capturing storytelling scenes and travel, as well as having fun being creative.   I use a variety of approaches, from in-camera multiple and long exposures to compositing images in post development.  Finding and portraying each story requires a lot of thought and experimentation to find complementary combinations of subjects and lighting.  Final touches include adding subtle textures to help further distance perception of the image from reality - I have used a wide range, from painted canvasses to the interior of my dishwasher.
